Hurricane Awareness: Keep your eyes open

If you are unlucky enough to experience a hurricane, get in a safe location and stay there until the storm has completely passed. Don’t be fooled by the eye of the storm, which can mislead people into thinking that the storm is over. Winds and rain will increase rapidly immediately after the eye passes overhead.

Hurricane Awareness: Do you own a boat?

When a hurricane threatens is not the time to be putting your boat protection plan together! While the sun is shining make a plan for your boat for severe weather events. Discuss your plan with your marina or harbor master and make recommended adjustments. Make sure both have current contact information for you.

Hurricane Awareness: Floods kill people during hurricanes
While storm surge and high winds are always potential threats in a hurricane, many more people have died from inland freshwater flooding. Inland flooding can be a major threat to communities hundreds of miles from the coast as heavy rain falls from these huge tropical air masses. Stay alert for flash flooding, be ready to move to higher ground, and never drive through flooded roadways. Turn Around, Don’t Drown!
